π₯ Importing Sequences (.SEQ)
Once you convert MIDI tracks using the **MIDI to SEQ** module, save the resulting `.SEQ` file to the root or a subfolder of your Compact Flash card. Insert the card into your MPC 1000 slot, press **[MODE] + PAD 2 (LOAD)**, select the file, and press **[F5] (DO IT)** to import the notes into the active sequence.
π Loading Sample Programs (.PGM)
When building programs using the **WAV to PGM** module, place the generated `.PGM` file and all associated `.WAV` audio samples inside the **same directory folder** on your CF card. On the MPC, load the `.PGM` file. The MPC will automatically scan and stream the matching audio samples into active RAM table locations.

Master Clock & Pattern Sync: Eliminating the Elektron "One-Bar Late" Bug
Overview & The Problem
When using an Akai MPC1000 (running JJOS or stock OS) as the master brain to sequence pattern-based Elektron gear (Digitakt, Digitone, Octatrack, Syntakt), syncing tempo and transport is straightforward. However, automating pattern changes via standard MIDI Program Changes (PC) introduces a notorious issue: the Elektron device changes patterns one full cycle late.
Why This Happens
- The MPC Architecture: Standard MIDI behavior sends a Program Change on
Bar 01, Beat 01, Tick 00of a new sequence. - The Elektron Architecture: Elektron instruments do not hard-cut patterns mid-measure. Instead, they require incoming PC messages slightly ahead of the downbeat to load sample buffers and pattern sequencer data into active memory before executing the switch on the step boundary.
- The Result: When the PC arrives right on
01.01.00, the Elektron device considers it "too late" for the immediate downbeat, queues the pattern, plays the previous pattern for another full cycle (determined byCH.LEN), and switches an entire bar or loop late.
The Solution: Lookahead PC Placement
By creating a dedicated MIDI utility track on the MPC and placing the Program Change event a few ticks before the sequence boundary (on the final beat of the outgoing sequence), the Elektron receives the cue in advance and switches precisely on the downbeat.
Step 1: Global MIDI Sync Configuration
Ensure master clock and transport are locked and discrete Program Change channels are designated.
- Connect MPC1000 MIDI Out A (or B) β Elektron MIDI In.
- On the MPC1000:
- Go to `MODE` + `Pad 9` (MIDI / SYNC).
- Set `Sync Out` to

- Set the destination to match your Elektron setup: `MIDI: 16A`.
- Set the default Program Change field on the Main screen to `OFF` or `--`.

Position the PC event at the absolute tail of the outgoing sequence.

The 6-Output Summing Setup: Tracking Out Stems via Individual Outs
Overview & Routing Strategy
The Akai MPC1000 features 6 analog audio outputs: the main Stereo Out (L/R) plus 4 Assignable Individual Outs (1, 2, 3, 4). Tracking out stems using all 6 physical outputs lets you separate your drum elements and instruments for external analog summing, dedicated hardware processing, and multi-channel tracking into a DAW interface without soloing tracks over multiple passes.

Step 1: Physical Cabling & Interface Connections
- Connect the MPC1000 output jacks to your audio interface, patchbay, or mixer using 1/4-inch mono (TS) or balanced (TRS) cables:
- Stereo Out (L/R): Channels 1 & 2 on your interface.

Step 4: Gain Staging & Effect Bypass Considerations
- Internal Master FX Bypass: Audio routed to Individual Outs 1β4 completely bypasses the Master EQ and Master Compressor.
- Send FX (Reverb & Delay): The internal FX1 and FX2 return buses sum back to the Master Stereo Out (L/R). If you send a snare (routed to Out 2) to the internal Reverb (FX2), the wet reverb tail will emerge from the Stereo Out while the dry snare hits Out 2.
JJOS TRK MIX vs. PAD MIX: Building Clean Sub-Mixes and Effect Sends
Overview & The Core Architecture
In standard Akai OS, mixing is largely confined to individual pad adjustments or basic sequence panning. JJOS2XL fundamentally rethinks this by separating the console into two distinct routing layers: PAD MIX (the micro level) and TRK MIX (the macro level).

To make `TRK MIX` act as a master group fader for a kit or multi-sample program, the individual pads must delegate their routing authority to the sequencer track.
- Press `MODE` + `Pad 7` (PROGRAM EDIT) or open `PAD MIX` (`MODE` + `Pad 8`).
- Set the `OUT` parameter for all pads from `ST` to `TRK`.
- Shortcut: In JJOS Program Edit, you can use the multi-pad edit option to set `OUT: TRK` across all 64 pads in a single stroke.
- Now, changing the level or pan on the active sequencer track adjusts the entire kit uniformly while preserving the relative volume balance between elements.
Step 2: Setting Up Shared Reverb & Delay Sends
JJOS lets you configure FX sends at either the individual pad level or the track level:
- Method A: Per-Hit Sends (Snare Reverb within a Single Track): If your drum kit lives on a single track, keep `OUT: TRK` on the pads, but go to `PAD MIX` > `FX` sub-page. Set Pad A02 (Snare)

In standard Akai OS and traditional hardware samplers, chopping a sample requires destructive slicing: the operating system creates new, independent audio files for every slice and saves them into active RAM. This causes unnecessary file clutter and memory bottlenecks.
Non-Destructive Chopping (NDC) in JJOS2XL keeps a single source sample in RAM. Each pad in your program simply stores lightweight metadata pointers (Sample Start and Sample End frame markers) referencing specific sections of that single parent file.

- Press `MODE` + `Pad 5` (TRIM) and select your source loop.
- Press `[SLICE]` / `[CHOP]`. Select your slicing method (Auto Transient or grid divisions like
DIVIDE: 16). - Press the `[CONVERT]` soft key (usually F5/F6).
- In the Convert pop-up menu, change the target format from `SLICED SAMPLES` to `NON DESTRUCTIVE (NDC)`. Set your target program name and press `[DO IT]`.

Overview & The Core Mechanism
When pitching a standard audio loop up or down to match a projectβs BPM on classic hardware samplers, the pitch and playback speed are locked together. In JJOS2XL, Patched Phrases decouple tempo from pitch using a micro-slicing engine. The operating system slices a loop at transient boundaries and automatically adjusts the trigger intervals between slices to follow the master sequence BPM in real timeβwithout pitch distortion or timestretching artifacts.

For a Patched Phrase to calculate timing accurately, the loop must be trimmed to an exact mathematical bar length.
- Press `MODE` + `Pad 5` (TRIM) and select your loop.
- Set the `START` marker precisely on the transient of the first downbeat, and the `END` marker cleanly on the loop point (downbeat of Bar 5 for 4 bars).
Step 2: Setting the Original BPM & Beat Count
- In the TRIM screen, navigate to the `[PATCH PHRASE]` sub-page.
- Set the `BEAT` parameter to match the loop length (e.g.

Step 3: Generating and Triggering the Patched Phrase
- Select your slice resolution: `DIVIDE: 16` (16th-note divisions) or `DIVIDE: 32`.
- Press `[DO IT]` / `[CREATE]`. JJOS compiles the micro-slices into a specialized Patched Phrase sample (designated with a
(P)or[PP]next to the filename). - Press `MODE` + `Pad 7` (PROGRAM EDIT) and assign this Patched Phrase file to an empty pad (e.g. Pad A01). Set its mode to `ONE SHOT`.

Akai OS v2.0 vs. JJOS OS2XL
The Akai MPC 1000 originally shipped with Akai Professional OS (which culminated in Version 2.0). Japanese developer Japanese Jack (JJ) overhauled the firmware, creating JJOS. JJOS OS2XL converts the MPC 1000 from a basic sampler into a modern linear music workstation.

Essential Copy Shortcuts
JJOS adds rapid physical key combinations to copy parameters (which is not possible on Akai OS v2.0 where parameters must be entered manually per pad):
- Copy Cursor Parameter: Hold [UNDO SEQ] and strike any pad. The value of the parameter currently highlighted by the cursor will be copied directly to the struck pad.
- Copy Entire Pad: Position the cursor on the PAD field (e.g.
A01), hold [UNDO SEQ], and strike another pad (e.g.A03). All parameters (filters, levels, envelopes, samples) are duplicated. - Copy Layer Value: Inside a [WINDOW] Layer edit window, hold [UNDO SEQ] and press Cursor UP or DOWN. This copies the parameter value (like Tune or Cutoff) from Layer 1 to Layer 2, 3 or 4.
Pad Mixer & Output Routing
The Pad Mixer screen ([MODE] + PAD 8) displays level columns, pan circular meters, and FX routing assignments for all 16 pads in the active bank.
Output Configurations
Press F2 (L/OUT) to configure output destinations:
- ST: Routes pad signal to main L/R STEREO OUT.
- 1β4: Routes pad signal directly to assignable mix outputs 1β4.
- L / R: Direct hard panning route to L or R Stereo ports (MPC 1000 exclusive).
- TR: Follows the settings configured in the Track Mixer.
Track Mixer & MIDI Automation
The Track Mixer ([MODE] + PAD 4) configures levels, panning, and FX routing for tracks as a whole. Settings are stored directly within each sequence.
MIDI CC Automation Mappings
Press [WINDOW] on the Mixer screen and toggle MIDI to ON. The mixer now responds to incoming external MIDI controller events:

MIDI Sync & Soft Thru Settings
Configure your external MIDI inputs and synchronization options under the MIDI/SYNC menu.
Soft Thru Configurations
Soft Thru determines how incoming MIDI note events are routed out to external instruments:
- OFF: No MIDI pass-through.
- AS TRACK: Replaces incoming MIDI channels with the channel assigned to the active track.
- OMNI-A / B: Passes incoming MIDI data through unchanged, routing out directly to MIDI OUT A or B ports.
LCD Screenshots Utility
JJOS Exclusive: In the MIDI/SYNC screen, press F6 (SCREEN). Set Screen Shots to ON. Whenever you press the physical [UNDO] button, the MPC writes a raw BMP screenshot of the current LCD screen directly to your CF Card.
Save & Load Operations
Manage storage memory cards in load/save screens ([MODE] + PAD 3).
Auto Load Setup
To automatically load your programs, samples, and sequence tracks whenever you switch on the MPC: Create a folder named AUTOLOAD in the root directory of your CF Card and save your default project files inside this folder.
Song Mode & WAV Mixdown Export
Song mode ([MODE] + PAD 10) arranges your separate sequence blocks into sequential chains to construct full songs.
WAV Audio Mixdown Export
JJOS allows you to render your constructed songs or sequences directly into a stereo WAV file on your CF Card.Akai OS: Not available. You must connect the analog stereo output jacks to a recording interface or computer DAW.
Foot Switch Assignment Settings
Configure the MPC 1000's dual foot switch inputs in the OTHER -> F3 (FOOTSW) screen to trigger transport or pad hits.
